“Hard times like fodder we carry”: Gloria Anzaldúa and the Mindfulness Principle of Patience

A recording from Cassie Premo Steele's live video

How can we take all the pain, all the parts of ourselves, all the hard times we are carrying, and make something beautiful and nurtuning and transformative from it?

Let me walk you through it.

In today’s Green Ink Live, I share the philosophy and poetry of Gloria Anzaldúa, and we practice the mindfulness principle of patience through a guided meditation.

If you’re feeling too stressed or pressed to take the time to do this, then let me suggest that this is exactly what you need right now.

I hope to see you this weekend!

The Soda City Poetry Festival takes place Friday and Saturday in Columbia, South Carolina. You can get all the details on the website, and my personal recommendations for must-attend events here.

I’m honored to have been chosen as one of three featured poets for the Midlands at the Festival, and I’ll be reading with Evelyn Berry and Naya Lani on Saturday, June 28 at 1:45-2:45 PM at Richland Library Main, 1431 Assembly Street, Columbia, SC 29201. All Soda City Poetry Festival readings, conversations and workshops are FREE.

For those who don’t live near Columbia, I’m teaching a class on Saturday, June 28 at 10 AM- 1 PM ET online - poeTRYhealing: poetry as a way to heal from individual and collective trauma is hosted by The Loft Literary Center and features poetry by Gloria Anzaldúa, Ellen Bass, Joy Harjo, Yusef Komunyakaa, Audre Lorde, Anne Sexton, and Ocean Vuong. Registration is still open.

This will be my last Green Ink Live until August as I’m heading out to Oklahoma soon for the Woody Guthrie Poetry Festival, which takes place in Oklahoma City, Okemah, and Tulsa.

All of the classes from June are free to watch, so be sure to check out the others on the poetry of Audre Lorde, Joy Harjo and Ocean Vuong if you haven’t seen them yet.

And beginning in August, Green Ink Live classes will be only for paid subscribers, so consider chipping in 5 bucks a month to get access to that. I’ve got some exciting things planned….

Green Ink is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.

In the meantime, be patient with yourself and each other. Growing takes time.
